PMN's year in review: Te Rito cadets reflect on repping their culture across the media industry

A few of the Te Rito cadets shared their highs and lows from a year as trainee journalists.

Only 1.8 per cent of journalists in Aotearoa identify as Pacific, but the Te Rito Journalism Programme is set to make a significant impact on changing that.


The programme is in its second year, and half of this year’s 12 cadet cohort are of Pacific heritage.


They’ve all been gaining experience across four newsrooms - NZME, Whakaata Maaori, Newshub and Pacific Media Network.


Three cadets spoke to 531pi Pacific Morning’s host Levi Matautia-Morgan about their experiences with the programme and starting off in journalism.
